Summer’s end observed with pizza at Robinson Gardens Apartments

Summer’s end observed with pizza at Robinson Gardens Apartments

The dog days of summer are here, and what better way to celebrate that at Springfield Housing Authority’s  Robinson Gardens Apartments Youth Group?

A pizza party, of course.

Teens and adults gathered to celebrate the end of summer and start of another productive school year, with pizza donated by benefactor Santino Tomassini. The afternoon event was punctuated by laughter and the sounds of friendship.

Youth Group Coordinator Jimmie Mitchell said the summer was both productive and relaxed, with most of the 20 involved teens working jobs and if not, gathering at Robinson Gardens on a regular basis. Now that school is near, the focus will return on afternoon sessions that feature professional speakers, field trips, and tutoring.

“We had a very good summer,” Mitchell said. “We’re looking forward to another great year.”

Mitchell will soon begin his fifth year with the group, which will hopefully serve as a model to be replicated at other SHA family developments.

Youth Group President Stacey Sands said she enjoyed her work as a receptionist at New England Farm Workers Council, and she’s looking forward to her final year studying criminal justice at Springfield Technical Community College.

“I like the group here because I like meeting new people and motivating kids to stay in school and achieve their goals,” she said. “It was a good summer.”

Also on hand for the pizza party were SHA Resident Services Director Pamela Wells and Talk/Read/Succeed! Outreach Coordinator Lynne Cimino.
