SHA full smoking ban to take effect April 1

SHA full smoking ban to take effect April 1

Smoke.jpgThe full smoking ban will soon be in effect at all Springfield Housing Authority properties, inside and out.

The smoking ban has been implemented in phases, starting one year ago with a new rule prohibiting the cancer-causing substance in the interiors of all SHA buildings. That included business offices and areas, common rooms and hallways, and residential apartments.

As of April 1, the ban will extend across all properties.

SHA Executive Director William H. Abrashkin said the ban has a good-health goal, and will be implemented as needed. He said the interior ban that took effect last year has been proceeding well, and he expects the full rule in force to be the same.

“It’s a process,” Abrashkin said. “This is another step in the process. We want to make our properties healthy places to live and work, and to provide the foundation for a cultural change, in which people will be more health conscious.

“Our hope is that the habit of being more health conscious will then be passed on to the younger generations,” he said.

Signs have been posted at all SHA properties stating the new level of the smoking ban. Violations will be handled in typical fashion either as employment violations, for workers, or as tenant violations, for residents.

Already, there is evidence that some SHA residents and employees have quit smoking, even with the partial ban, he said. Smoking cessation programs are available through Gandara Center’s Tobacco Free Community Partnership.
