Belated Christmas party at Sullivan Apartments
Gift-giving and receiving proved to be a fun time at Sullivan Apartments even after the holiday season officially ended.
Children at the Springfield Housing Authority development on Nursery Street got their gifts on January 6 from Toys for Tots, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve-sponsored gift giveaway program.
Boys and girls lined up for their toys, pleasantly surprised to be treated following the holidays. Resident Services Housing Retention Program Coordinator Daisy Gomez said several of the families stayed for a tour of the Deborah Barton Neighborhood Network Center, where the after-school program is located.
That building also includes a computer classroom and a regular classroom, where the SHA holds GED classes, computer literacy classes, and a variety of other programs aimed at helping families become self-sufficient.
Gomez said she hoped to team the gift-giving afternoon with an outreach intended to draw more families into the services available there. Sullivan is one of two SHA developments that include Talk/Read/Succeed! a collaborative and family-based effort aimed at boosting literacy skills among young children.
As a result of having T/R/S! at Sullivan, there are many programs offered to children of all ages, and their parents.
“We would like to encourage our families in this development to come and take advantage of all the services we offer here at the Network Center,” Gomez said. “We want the families to feel comfortable coming to us for assistance.”
Sullivan’s after-school program is run by the YMCA of Greater Springfield.
